First released in Japan on June 17 with a U.S premiere held at the Aniplex of America on July 1-4, the anime film titled “The irregular at magic high school The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars” a.k.a. “Gekijōban Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Hoshi o Yobu Shōjo” has been running for total of three weeks and has just fallen off the top 10 box office charts on its third weekend. But even with this drop, the film’s official website has announced of Tuesday, earned a total of 400 million yen (about US$3.53 million).
It was in March 2016 that plans for the film was revealed in the 19th volume of the light novel series. A light novel which began as a webcomic created by Tsutomu Satō before turning into what it is in July 2011. The film itself falls under the production of 8-bit with the anime series’ unit director and storyboarder Risako Yoshida as director. Rather than take a page from the light novel series, a new story was created for the film by Tsutomu himself who worked alongside with WriteWorks for the script.
As for the character design and animation of the film, they fell under Kana Ishida, the character designer and chief animation director of the anime series. Then for the music is Taku Iwasaki.
The tale which Tsutomu wrote for the film takes place at the start of spring season, which marks a close to the first year of Magic High School for “irregular” elder brother Tatsuya and his intelligent younger sister Miyuki. With spring break on the rise, the siblings decide to spend it with their friends at private villa on Ogasawara Island. But the peace of a vacation doesn’t last long for the group as a mysterious young girl named Kokoa, appears before them after escaping a naval base and tells Tatsuya her one wish.
When the film was first released in Japan, it earned around million yen (about US$1.47 million) having sold about 107,000 tickets and earning #5 at the Japanese box office in its debut. In its second weekend the film went down to #6 in ranking but earned more than 300 million yen (about US$2.67 million).
More than releasing news of its latest profit, the film’s official website has also revealed that for the fourth weekend of the film, theatergoers who will attend the film will be receiving one of three mini colored paper boards illustrated by Kana Ishida.
