Rilukkama is a fictional character created by Aki Kondo, a former employee of the Japanese company San-X, which produced the character in 2003. The character, whose name is combination of a Japanese transliteration of the English word “relax”, and kuma, the Japanese word for “bear” was first seen in a series of picture books called Rilakkuma Seikatsu produced by San-X.

With their teddy bear like appearance, Rilakkuma has gained a popularity as a soft-toy character and over time has gained a number of merchandise including stationery, dishware, backpacks, and stuffed animals along with his friends.

His friends whom are Korilakkuma, Kiiroitori, Chairoikoguma are constant companions for the bear in the franchise, the most frequent being the little white cub Korilakkuma and Kaoru’s pet yellow bird Kiiroitori as he lives with them. Chairoikoguma on the other hand is a little brown bear whom was introduced later that the first three in 2016 and holds the distinctive feature of having white hair on his chest.

The tale of the series tells of the sudden appearance of the bear character in the apartment of office worker Kaoru. Prior to the characters sudden unexplained appearance, Kaoru was idly spending his day to day life. Rilakkuma is described to love wearing variety of costumes such as a kappa costume and likes food like pancakes, omelette rice, pudding, and dango.

A mystery about Rilakkuma lies in the zipper upon his back as there have been hints that the entire lower half of the character is but a costume due to ccertain images showing suits that look exactly like the bottom half of the character being hung up to dry.
