A Curvy Love Story: Pochamani

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

This is the story of a kind girl with a beautiful girl named Mugi. Being on the chubby side but entirely comfortable with her weight, Mugi never believed herself to have an opportunity at love. But that all changes one day as she is approached by one young man named Tagami, a “pochama” or a person who loves soft squishy things.

The Good

The art is not very striking but it works well enough as a general art for shoujo works. The love story is something that you will rarely see with somewhat relatable characters and a memorable plot. The dynamic of the leads also worked well and even a few scenes for comedy slipped in due to the antics of the male lead. There are moments that presents thoughts to chew on and generally brings a soft love story with dashes of drama.

The Bad

More could have done in terms of developing the male character, specifically the male lead who began the catalyst by confessing his feelings to the female lead. There is also the friends that could been explored in terms of their reactions to the relationship and not just with the female best friends. There is much to explore about the series and characters and with the general simplicity of the plot, there is room for more as evidenced bit by bit in the newer chapters.
Conclusion

So many times has there been a story with males that have less than stellar looks but are actually good people at heart. Here is a series that takes on not only judgement on physical looks but accepting ones body as well.

Never before have I encountered a manga series wherein the female is not a lanky or delicate young woman but rather a curvy high school girl who is loved by many female characters for her kind demeanour and warm disposition. The characters a good and relatable in certain ways, the plot is simple and easy to follow, the art while not great is not bad and the story is a unique piece that ties in everything.
