Beauty in Surrealism: Paprika

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

This is a world wherein a treatment dream therapy has been invented and technology named “DC Mini” have been invented and allows a person to enter into another person’s dreams with an avatar. This is where Doctor Atsuko Chiba and her alter ego Paprika come in and conduct sessions such as with Detective Toshimi Konakawa. The problem however is the device is not sanctioned and soon the Doctor’s sessions become more complex as the world of dreams and reality begin to collide.

The Good

The art is something that you rarely see in the anime world and the surrealism of it tickles the imagination. The plot itself is interesting enough to drive the reader and seems like something that you would find in a spy movie. Then there is also the music which is great in its own way and there are more works by the artist of the film to enjoy. Paprika is one of the more interesting characters for the film, with her curiosity and playful personality, she is very engaging. Filled with action and mystery, the film is a watch to have if you need to pass the time with something interesting in.

The Bad

While the looks of the characters are great, their memorability and dynamic is not that great. Other than Paprika and one or two other characters, not much can be said on how they were presented and the way they worked themselves in the film. The art itself may be a problem for those who is not used to and is hard to concentrate on one corner when there is so much packed onto the dreamworld. Then there is also the build up of the antagonists which seem in a personal opinion, somewhat out of the blue with how little their backstory it. The same could be said for the detective character of the film as well but on a different level. Overall the art, animation, music and plot were good but the characters and their story arcs and personality could have been developed.

Conclusion

If you want to watch a film with unique art, engaging animation and an interesting story to go with it, then this is a film to watch. While the art is surreal and at times may be much for some people, there is a beauty that can be found it. Many anime have explore dream worlds, this one is just one of them that brings a new image to the idea.
