It was announced during the “Hibike! Euphonium 2 Special Talk Event 1- 2- nensei Godo! Uji de Omatsuri Festival” event on Sunday that Ayano Takeda’s Hibike! Euphonium novels will have a sequel novel.
Aside from the two upcoming animated films, the sequel novel will have a new story and set in Kimiko’s second year in high school. It was the staff from Kyoto Animation who officially made the announcement.
Fans of this franchise will also be introduced with new first year characters. Kyoto Animation did not mention if the sequel novel will have the same story as the two upcoming films. The first Hibike! Euphonium novel will be released in English by Yen Press in November.
Just to give you a little synopsis, Hibike! Euphonium begins with a girl named Kumiko who abandoned music completely after having a previous bad experience at the National Music Band Competition. As she begins her freshmen year at Kitauji High School, she ends up getting back into it slowly. The problem is the school’s band was having problems for they haven’t had a place in the past regional qualifiers unlike before. In between this predicament, Kumiko get acquainted with the fellow band member named Reina. With both girls together along with the band, will they be able to get in the nationals this time?
The anime is based on the novel of the same name which was first published in Japanese in 2013. This followed with a couple of novels released in 2015 like Hibike! Euphonium 2 Kitauji Kōkō Suisōgaku-Bu no Ichiban Nagai Natsu (The Kitauji High School Concert Band’s Longest Summer), Hibike! Euphonium 2 Kitauji Kōkō Suisōgaku-Bu, Saidai no Kiki (The Kitauji High School Concert Band’s Worst Disaster), as well as two short story collections Hibike! Euphonium 2 Kitauji Kōkō Suisōgaku-Bu no Himitsu no Hanashi (The Kitauji High School Concert Band’s Secret Story) and Hibike! Euphonium Kitauji Kōkō no Suisōgakubu Nikki (The Kitauji High School Concert Band’s Diary). A two-part novel spinoff was also released by Takeda titled Rikka Kōkō Marching Band e Yōkoso! (Welcome to the Rikka High School Marching Band). The spin-off is focused on the character Azusa Sasaki as well as Rikka High School which is based on the real-life Tachibana High School Marching Band).
The two Hibike! Euphonium films are slated to be released in 2018. The film that is about Mizore and Nozomi will be directed by Naoko Yamada while Tatsuya Ishihara will direct the film about Kumiko’s second-year student life.
