A New Look to Psychics: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Posted in: Anime News

Synopsis

Psychic Powers, it’s a thing that many would imagine would make their lives easier and more exciting if they were to have them. Well, that is not the case for one Kusuo Saiki, a born psychic who possesses more than one ability known about psychics. Telepathy, X-ray vision, Pyrokinetic powers, you name it, he got it and it’s a complete curse for the young man who wants nothing more than to live a hassle-free life. But with his abilities and a wacky set of friends and family, this is not the case.

The Good

There are so many supernatural anime involving psychics taking on the genres of action, drama or slice of life. It is quite refreshing that someone came up with the idea of creating a comedy series focused on the daily life of a psychic character and not bring in heavy drama. The art style of the series while strange, works well for the theme of the show and the animation helps support its flow.

The characters are a treat to watch, each one unique in their own way even when they embody different sterotypes such as the delinquent and the popular girl. While there is no central plot to the series, the main theme of a daily of a psychic remains the same throughout and brings in many comedic and memorable moments.

The Bad

There is not much negativity to be said about the art or animation other than it is something that one has to get used to before actually appreciating the series. The characters themselves may not all be to the taste of every viewer, seeing as it is a comedy that characters are amped to be wacky in their own way and at times they may come off as obnoxious to some viewers not used to it. While it is a comedy series it would also be nice to explore more on Saiki himself as a character with his abilities.

Conclusion

This is a unique supernatural comedy that should be listed amongst your list of comedies to watch if you’re looking for something that takes that ideas of psychics, twist it and bring in a short but comedic work, then this is what you want. Each character are a delight to watch with the series having short timed episodes, it works well as something to watch to pass the time as well. Overall, this is a comedy that will leave a mark in your idea of the supernatural genre.
