Back in the 2000 though, there was a running theme for females cast to fight, alter egos, in short, magical girls. Though not all listed are about magical girls, it does have the commonality of girls taking on a different persona when fighting. The following five hold that theme

5. Angelic Layer

While it may not involve magical girls, it does involve the characters having a persona on the stage taking on the fights with their commands. This is a world where electronic dolls called “Angelic Layers” exist as battle figures in an arena. 12-year-old Misaki Suzuhara has gotten involved in the world of Angelic Layers and has taken part of the Angelic Layer tournaments to fight the greatest Angelic Layer champions of the nation.

4. Pretear

This is a show that doesn’t have the girl transform into her magical girl suit with the use of magical tools but rather with bishounen men transforming into her outfit and guiding her abilities. Focusing on a 16-year-old girl trying to adjust to a new step family, the series tells of seven young males suddenly appearing before her and revealing to her that she holds a special power that will help defeat a great evil. While reluctant at first, when her friend ends up in danger she soon finds herself entangled into a world where an evil princess is bent on destruction

3. Futari wa Precure

This is the series that began everything in the anime division of the Precure franchise, and in this series there were only two girls to fight the evil in the story. The story tells of two high school girls named Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro. Upon encountering Mipple and Mepple, two residents of the Garden of Light the two were chosen to become the defenders of earth against the evil that is the Dark Zone and thus Mipple and Mepple, two residents of the Garden of Light.

2. Fushigiboshi no☆Futagohime

Enter into a completely different planet where seven kingdoms co-exist and all fall under the light of the Sun’s Blessing from the Kingdom of the Sun. However, for an unknown reason it seems as if the light of all is weakening. Luckily enough not all is doomed for the kingdoms or the life of the planet for in the Sun Kingdom there are twin princess named Fine and Rein and both are gifted with the ability of Prominence and are looking for a solution.

1. Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch

This is one of the first known anime in the community to have incorporated both mermaids and magical girls into one concept and for many it worked. The story is about a mermaid princess named Lucia and how she entrusts a magical pearl to a boy she saved from falling overboard on a ship one night having gained a crush on him. Years later she travels to the human world in order to retrieve her pearl and with her power of music she stands as a defence for the mermaid kingdoms against the growing evil force.
