Couples in anime are something that many romantics in the anime community look forward and at the same time are also frustrated with at times. The meeting, the long build up and finally the confession with a kiss to seal the deal are all things that viewer likes to look forward to with a couple in an anime. But more than the story build up around them, it is the characters themselves that interest the viewers and how they play off one another, especially those that the story intends for them to end up with.
But then there are those romances that many have found aggravation with, not because on how the plot made them or how they didn’t end up together when they should have. No, the main problem that is being addressed with this list is the main female leads/romantic interests of different anime and how they are the least ideal character to have been paired with the male lead. Being as unbiased as possible, this list looks at not just the personality of the character but their dynamic with the male lead, how they treat them and how redeemable they may be.
5. Chichi – Dragon Ball
A good mother yes? A good wife? Not exactly; they say love is blind but Chichi did not really think things through when she entered into a relationship with Goku. There is no denying the fact that she is strong woman with certain good qualities to her, but the expectations that she piles upon Goku, from being the perfect husband by being there when she needs him and looking out for her son shows how little she truly understands that Goku is not entirely human.
What’s more she rages at him for not meeting her expectations and this just presents her as a female lead who did not fully understand what it means to enter into a relationship with an alien, an alien from a warrior race as an added point. Yet she is a good mother who was able to raise a good and strong child, so she ranks at the least of the list with a chance of change.
4. Moka – Rosario + Vampire
A character with not only a strong nature but high pride this is a character that holds the motto of “know your place” and that is the problem. The outer personality of this character may seem fine and sweet and though at the end she ends up with a generally loving relationship with the male lead she started the relationship with him being as her drink packet. Not the best start for an ‘equal’ relationship.
And that is the problem, she controls the situation and int turn it seems as if the male lead has been turned into someone
3. Ako – And You Thought There Is Never a Girl Online?
You’ve heard of those people who have lost themselves in the line between fantasy and reality because of video games right? Well this is a girl who has crossed far beyond that line and brings in a whole new brand of crazy for the male lead who for the most inconceivable of reasons, has fallen for her. Ako has immersed herself in the world of games to the point that she perceives herself as the greater being and those who do not play the game as ‘normies’ who are not worth a thing.
This is not the type of girl someone would want to bring home for dinner nore should they engage in a relationship with her. With her genuinely insane situation and obsessive nature that is not only being ignored around her but has left her growing more dangerous, she ranks as number 3.
2. Akane – Ranma 1/2
Here is a look at an aggressive female that takes out her frustrations on the male lead, who while not the most tactful is as much as a victim as she is. Some may say she is a note for a strong female character who won’t take crap but was handed a short hand when an idiotic male announces that only the one to defeat Akane will be able to date her and in turn gave her a negative view of males with how much they attempt to defeat her for a simple date but the negative aspect of her character outweighs the good.
It is understandable that she would be upset that she is being forced to be brought into an arranged marriage but taking it out on the male who is not only being forced to marriage just like her but is constantly being called a pervert and assaulted for misunderstandings is simply not something to be applauded. Almost never does she find herself in the wrong and constantly blames Ranma for things he had no control over, as such she ranks as number two of this list.
1. Louise – Zero no Tsukaima
This character has been noted by many for her less than agreeable characteristics and personality in the series and with Saito. She has a potrayed as a character who believes herself to be in the right in her rather abusive treatment of Saito simply because he is her familiar and as a ‘commoner’ this equals to him being lower than a dog in her eyes. Many may argue that her upbringing and the bullying of her classmates have made this way and she is to be pitied but she never takes responsibilities for her actions nor does she apologizes.
She constantly strikes at Saito not only when she believes he is ‘disobeying’ her but she calls him a pervert for having the attention of different women and he does not even flirt with them. He is a poor boy dragged into a whole different world away from everything he knows and she cries when things turn out bad for her. In all honesty while this is a list meant to show no bias, Louise has shown to have earned not only the frustration of many viewers but the top rank of this list.
