What’s wrong with handsome boys liking cute things? Nothing according to the 2015 multimedia project, Sanrio Boys. As of April 4, and 5, two new characters were revealed on the project’s official Twitter account per its expansion.
To those who are unaware, the project tells the tale of a high school boy with a love for the Sanrio cream coloured puppy character Pom Pom Purin, Kouta Hasegawa. Upon entering his new school, he coincidentally meets another boy with a love for Sanrio characters as well. His name is Yuu Mizuno, and he loves the bunny character My Melody.
As Yuu discovers Kouta’s own love for the cute characters, he encourages him that there is nothing to be ashamed of. Together with Shunsuke Yoshino, an aloof looking boy who loves Hello Kitty, Ryou Nishimiya, a princely looking boy who loves Little Twin Stars, and Seiichiro Minamoto, a serious looking boy who love Cinnamon, the five boys come to learn to embrace their love the cute characters rather than feel embarrassed about.
So far the project has launched a merchandise line which was released last April, two types of manga series being handled by Mai Ando, a smartphone game and most recently, an anime adaptation has been announced to be under works and set to premier in winter 2018.
Now the two new characters to be joining the crew have their own love for the Sanrio characters Badtz-Maru and Keroppi. The first character to be introduced on April 4 is a high school boy with a love for the black penguin character named Badtz Maru, named Subaru Amagaya. Not much description has been given on this character other than that he is a dark haired and dangerous looking boy who desires to be like his favoured character and “find a map to freedom.”
The next character to be introduced is the only adult of the group, Naoki Sugami, a teacher in charge of the animals. He holds a love for the frog character Keroppi but was unable to speak about it due to being an adult.
