Posted in: Anime News

Get ready for more sword fighting action and more handsome boys as another anime in the Touken Ranbu franchise titled Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu is set to premiere this July! A video released on Sunday teases on what to expect in this upcoming anime. With the animation done by ufotable, the same company that produced Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Zero, and God Eater, this is an anime show definitely worth a watch in the next few months. To add up the hype, Kalafina returns as the group will perform the ending theme song!

Kalafina has performed in shows like Kuroshitsuji or as it’s known in the US, Black Butler.

The anime’s official website released a “sword action introduction video” on Sunday which teases its weapons animators. You may check out the video below:

Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu will star in Ryohei Kimura as Izuminokami Kanesada (or Kane-san for short), Junya Enoki as Horikawa Kunihiro, Kento Hama as Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Tooru Sakurai as the Yari Tonbokiri, Seiichiro Yamashita as Yagen Toshiro, and Soma Saito as Tsurumaru Kunikaga. No other additional characters have been revealed as of this time. Soma Saito will be performing the anime’s opening theme.

To make sure that the anime will remain accurate to its original basis (an online browser game as well as a bit of Japanese historical background), the ufotable staff will be guided along with the following individuals: Tatsuya Yamamura for historical research, weapons animators Mitsuru Obunai, Masayuki Kunihiro, and Masaru Kimura, and swordsmanship guidance by Kogyoku Watanabe.

Just to give you guys a little background, the anime is based from a popular Japanese browser and mobile game Touken Ranbu by DMM Games and Nitroplus. A Player who registers and plays the game is given the role as saniwa whose mission is to create and obtain swords, train them, and cleanse out the evils in are plaguing the world. It is personification of known historical Japanese swords into handsome men that got this franchise to be so popular until this day.

The first anime produced under this franchise is Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru which premiered in Japan on October with the season’s last episode aired in December. Unlike the upcoming anime, Hanamaru was produced by a separate company called Doga Kobo. In special event called Hanamaru Biyori! that happened in Japan on February 5, it was announced the anime’s second season is slated to air in January 2018.

With the immense hype and massive fan base, there seems to be no stopping Touken Ranbu in taking the world by storm with its unique gameplay and continuous growing franchise.
