One of the things that the anime community is well known for is for its embodiment of the statement, not everything is at it seems. Whether it be a sweet-faced character turning out to be a deadly force of nature or a tough looking character that scares others but in truth is a soft-hearted person looking for friends, anime is known to dish out various types of characters that makes the viewer think one thing only to end up being baffled or amused on how the character would turn out instead.

But this concept doesn’t just stop with characters, even the plots of the anime can turn out completely different to how it was perceived from the beginning or how it was even advertised to the viewer. The following anime are a top five of anime that has deceived viewers.

5. Kotoura-san

From the outside, this is the comedic tale between young high school girl Kotoura Haruka, with the ability to read minds and a perverted Manabe Yoshihisa who becomes infatuated with Kotoura as they go through their high school days. However from the first episode alone it is shown that this is not the case as a tragic tale lies with a number of these characters.

4. Clannad

At the beginning this anime tells the tale of a delinquent boy named Tomoya Okazaki who one day encounters a girl who catches his attention by suddenly exclaiming the word, “Anpan.” This girl is Nagisa Furukawa, an upbeat girl who exclaims strange words to motivate herself and suddenly declares herself to be Tomoya’s friend. This a journey of friendship and the realization that there is more to life than one may think. However, there comes a turn in this anime that may just leave a tragic mark.

3. When they Cry

Entering a seemingly peaceful and quiet town about to celebrate their own festival is Keiichi Maebara. As time passes he befriends schoolmates Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou, and Rika Furude and the group soon becomes inspereable. However, as the festival nears, Keiichi begins to unravel a horrifying tale behind the folklore of the festival.

2. School-Live

This the story of four girls named Yuki Takeya, Kurumi Ebisuzawa, Yuri Wakasa, and Miki Naoki. Along with the school adviser Megumi Sakura who decide to stay behind in their school. On the outside it seems as if they are doing what they can to enjoy their extra time in school, however, behind this bright and seemingly happy image lies a tale of survival.

1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Have you ever wished you had magic? Who hasn’t? For this story, regular middle school girls Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki, they gain the chance to become magical girls upon meeting the cat like magical familiar named Kyuubey. To do this however, Kyuubey is to grant them one wish, and in exchange, the girls are to be turned into magical girls in order to gain the power to have this wish granted. However, this deal comes at a heavy price, as exchange student and magical girl Homura Makeri attempts to warn the girls of the consequences.
