Plot Summary

In the peaceful theocracy of Simulicram, everyone is born female. At age 17, each maiden undergoes a special ceremony where she chooses her sex. However, only Pairs of maiden priestesses can synchronize with the ancient flying ships known as Simoun needed to defend Simulicram. These Pairs refrain from undergoing the ceremony as long as they wish to keep piloting their Simoun.

Aer is recruited to be a Simoun pilot after a terrifying attack by an enemy nation decimates the squadron known as Chor Tempest. To earn her wings she needs to find her way into the heart of Neviril, Regina of Chor Tempest. But Neviril’s heart still belongs to her previous Pair, lost in the battle when she attempted a forbidden Simoun maneuver.

About the Show

Simoun is a sci-fi yuri anime television series by Studio Deen. Under the direction of Junji Nishimura, Simoun aired a total of 26 episodes between April 3, 2006, and September 25, 2006.
A manga adaptation was created, with the same characters and settings but presented a different storyline.

Season Summary

Episode 1: Fallen Wings
Argentum sends a large fleet to attack Simulacrum, with the objective of obtaining the helical motor technology used in the Simoun. Two Simoun choirs appear to repel the attack, Chor Caput and Chor Tempest. However, the Argentum overwhelms the Simoun by sheer number, and Chor Tempest’s pilot Neviril commits a fatal mistake of indecision.

Episode 2: The Blue Spring
Aer eagerly decides to form a pair with Neviril, but the latter is still grieving after the last battle. Neviril accompanies the departing Sibyllae to the Spring, and almost enters herself out of depression.

Episode 3: Distant War
Chor Tempest’s morale plummets after a series of lost battles. Aer tries to convince Neviril to rejoin them and pair with her.

Episode 4: Nearby War
Neviril refuses Aer’s invitation, prompting the latter to search for a different person as her pair. Later, Aer and Rimone encounter the enemy face to face.

Episode 5: White Solitude
Dominuura arrives to try and help Chor Tempest back on its feet, starting with Rimone. However, Rimone struggles with her demons from the past as she takes on her first flight as an Auriga.

Episode 6: Wounds and Pain
Paraietta is torn between her feelings for Neviril and Kaim’s feelings for her. Meanwhile, Neviril remains being a hikikomori.

Episode 7: Over International Waters
Neviril’s father decides to step in and help his daughter back up on her feet. He sends in two Sibyllae to join Chor Tempest, Mamina and Yun. However, Neviril starts to accept Aer, which prompts a violent reaction from Mamina.

Episode 8: Prayer
Chor Tempest gets assigned to host one of Plumbum’s priestesses during the peace conference. The priestess’ identity turns out to be a ruse, as she is revealed to be a suicide bomber and destroys a large portion of the Arcus Prima’s Simoun.

Episode 9: The Hearing
Accompanied by Guragief, Neviril travels to the chambers of the High Council of Simulacrum to defend Chor Tempest after Halconf’s threat to disband the choir. Later, Chor Tempest repels a missile attack, saving them from disbandment.

Episode 10: Birds in a Cage
Sibylla Dominuura, a covert member of a faction against Halconf’s administration, finds a new ship called Messis for Chor Tempest while Arcus Prima is in dry dock. Conditions aboard the new ship is highly uncomfortable, much to the displeasure of the Sibyllae.

Episode 11: United Front
Chor Tempest joins forces with an infantry unit to carry out an airmobile assault, but finds itself fighting on the ground war at the front lines.

Episode 12: Sisters
Kaim and Alty are forced to work and fly together, but the shadow of the past haunts them both.

Episode 13: Reason
Neviril gets upset after Aer asks her to try the Emerald Ri Maajon with her.

Episode 14: Sacrosanct
Dominuura decides to directly disobey orders, as she orders the Messis to conduct an armed reconnaissance on the base ship of Plumbum. Moreover, she decides to violate Simulacrum’s strongest taboos by dismantling a Simoun, but discovers something entirely out of her expectations.

Episode 15: One, and Then Another
Chor Tempest falls into a dire situation, when the enemy sets a clever trap to divide them.

Episode 16: The Emerald Ri Mājon
The enemy forces continue to pummel down Chor Tempest, forcing them to hide in a nearby forest. However, the enemy manages to force them out of hiding, and almost wipes Chor Tempest out, if not for the unexpected arrival of the fully functional Arcus Prima.

Episode 17: The Ruins
The remaining choir are tasked to defend the Ruins, Simulacrum’s holiest site. However, Aer and Neviril discover a strange connection between the former’s music box and the Ruins.

Episode 18: The Funeral
After the funeral, Aer and Neviril discuss their recent discovery at the Ruins. Connecting the clues from stories told to her by her grandfather, Aer speculates that the Spring is outside normal reality, and that Dominuura and Rimone might be alive.

Episode 19: Sibylla
After a heated battle against a large enemy force, Neviril crashes along with her companions, but survives. On the ground, they are confronted by the Plumbish priestesses who pilot the two ancient Simouns.

Episode 20: Lament
The war continues to shift away from Chor Tempest’s favor, as they lose another member of the choir. Once again, Chor Tempest’s morale plummets.

Episode 21: The Door to a New World
At the Ruins, Emerald Ri Maajon’s secret is revealed. The chief priestess then orders Aer and Neviril to reactivate Chor Dextra, with the objective of preventing the war from happening.

Episode 22: Sortie
Arcus Prima, losing an important portion of its power after the departure of Aer, Neviril, and Yun, loses the war and sues for peace with the Alliance.

Episode 23: Eternal Maidens
Yun flies off to the Spring to talk to Onasia. There, Onasia reveals that she had become the keeper of the Spring, as punishment for attempting to become an eternal maiden.

Episode 24: Choice
Yun, pitying Onasia, willfully takes her place as keeper of the Spring. Meanwhile, the remaining sibyllae of the Chor Tempest prepare for their journey to the Spring.

Episode 25: Pair
Anubituf and Guragief conspires with the Plumbish priestesses to save Neviril and Aer, who are apparently arrested after refusing to go to the Spring.

Episode 26: Their Portrait
The final episode displays the different pairs in different points in time.
