First Episode Impression: "Merc Storia: Mukiryoku no Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo"

Synopsis

Set in a world where humans and monsters coexist, this is the story of a young man named Yuu. He holds the ability to tame monsters and upon discovering a young girl trapped in a bottle, he sets off on a journey marked with the goal of regaining her memories of Merc.

The Good

The first thing to be noted with the series is that it has a rather distinct style in terms of its setting and design. From the outfit of the main character to the way the monsters are designed, there is a somewhat distinct look for the series and it’s the first thing that could be considered as a plus point for the series. Next are the magic and the mystery that was presented in the episode. Both were rather subtle for the most part in the episode.

However, the presentation of the magic element of the series, especially the taming scene has an interesting point to it at least. Personally, the design of the monsters shown and the girl in the bottle make for a large plus for the series. As a first episode, there was a good amount of plot and structure introduced. There wasn’t any real conflict presented but it did have good character moments.

The Bad

The episode seemed like a rather typical fantasy adventure introductory segment. There wasn’t anything that really and truly stood out from the episode unless you count the magic and mystery elements. The protagonist has a rather typical feel to him and didn’t really present much that would connect them to the viewer. What’s more, there wasn’t a really distinct plot point of conflict that has the story going.

Conclusion

It’s a story that has a decent amount of potential given it shows a certain style with its setting, magic, and monsters. However, the presentation of the episode is rather typical and very little about it makes it stand out as a series. There weren’t any distinct points about the plot or protagonist that really hooks in the reader. It might get better in the later episodes but so far, the introduction doesn’t really say a lot for the series.
