General Impression: "Satsuriku no Tenshi"

Synopsis

This is a tale that begins with a 13-year-old named Rachel and her waking up with no memories. Finding herself trapped in the basement of an abandoned building with no clue to how she ended up here, she begins wandering around, lost and dizzy. Upon ending up in the hands of an insane counselor, she finds herself inexplicably saved by a completely bandaged serial killer named Zack. Following this event, the two form a bond, strengthened by strange, crazy promises as they make their way to escape the building.

First Impression

One of the main things that stood out for the first half of the series is that you couldn’t tell what was going to happen next. The way that certain scenes were built up and the tone was set in really hooks the viewer into this tense thriller vibe. It also helps that the characters also have some rather unpredictable qualities to them as well. Still, as interesting as the characters and the mystery is, there does seem to be the start of a pattern should every floor has this boss that Rachel and Zack have to face, but it does depend on how the series handles it.

General Impression

The series continues to do highly well in bringing in the thrill and suspense while also introducing new characters. In terms of character development, however? That’s a bit debatable. On one hand, it’s interesting to see how the main characters go through the gauntlets thrown at them but on the other, their characters sometimes come off as rather one note. The mystery and the action are still strong and there is some solid character exploration at least. There just could have been more done in terms of the main two’s dynamics with one another.

Conclusion

This is a series that has a good take on suspense and thrill with a good amount of mystery. The characters all have colorful personalities and those who are introduced have some interesting exploration. In terms of development, however, it could use some work. What’s more, there does seem to be a formula going on with the series. There is a good suspense/thriller/horror story going on with interesting characters but it could have panned out certain things better.
