Synopsis
This is the story of a delusional gothic lolita, Yurine and a demon girl with the tail of a cobra, Jashin-chan. After Jashin-chan ends up being summoned by Yurine, she finds herself tied to the girl and unable to return to hell. Upon discovering that she can return with the death of her summoner, Jashin-chan plots every way she can to end Yurine. Thus begins the duo’s slapstick comedy life of living together.
The Good
Fun and cute with a side of morbidness may be the best way to describe the impression that this episode left. Looking at the premise, it was expected that things would be wacky, but the episode gave a surprising amount of balance in its comedy. The whole violence aspect isn’t something new, but it doesn’t make it its main point of comedy which is something different. The characters were introduced well enough and there was a solid amount of exposition given to the series. Simply put, the episode gave a solid base to its comedy, story, and characters while leaving the viewer wanting more.
The Bad
The most prominent issue with the episode would be the pacing. This is mainly on how the episode seemed to rush in setting the tone and establishing the characters. Because of this, it feels like there is something lacking from the episode in terms of storytelling. It’s not a big thing but it’s clear that the series will be somewhat blase in revealing the pasts of the characters. On the other hand, it might not and there might be some depth later in the series. Either way, the episode pretty much confirmed a lot of expectations for the series.
Conclusion
It’s a series that has the potential to be more and gave a solid start. The only real problem so far is the pacing and other than that, the episode doesn’t show any glaring problems that could crop up later in the series. As stated the concept of a violent comedy isn’t all that new, and even the style used to balance things isn’t all that surprising. However, the series does have some unique points to it, so again, the series has potential given the way it executed its concept and comedy.
