1:1 Gundam Unveiled At New Home In Shizuoka

“We had to upstage Evangelion somehow.”

Hmmm… quite a week for life-sized mecha madness, huh? First the live unveiling of the Evangelion bust, replete with streamed online video and overly-talkative cos-play hosts, and now the re-introduction of the Gundam statue that stood last summer in Odaiba near the Higashi-Shizuoka train Station in Shizuoka. This happens to occur the day after Bandai announces that Turn A Gundam is headed to the US.

All I can say is: SWEET.

Shizuoka, as you may or may not know, is about an hour out of Tokyo and not terribly far from Mount Fuji. It’s also where Bandai happens to have its model manufacturing facilities. Conspiracy? YOU DECIDE.

Seriously though I think this is really cool and I’m stoked that something like this exists. The beam saber is a nice new addition, although I’m not sure if it happens to have the ability to glow in the famous neon pink glory that fans all over the world know and love. “Shining pink sabre” may have been hard to express in the building plans for this thing.

The statue is open to view from Saturday, July 24, 2010 to January 10, 2011.

the evangelion would be better if it was real, its moves were much more fluid than a gundam and actually like a person and not just a robot
