I think most anime geeks remember the erection of the life size Gundam statue in Odaiba last year. It was quite the spectacle that even included a star studded grand opening and one super lucky couple getting married! Even before construction was finished, pictures of the statue were flooding the interwebs bringing a proud tear to the eyes of Gundam fans all over the world. In fact, let’s take one more look at it.
Beautiful isn’t it?
But if you thought that was impressive, you haven’t seen anything yet! New pictures are surfacing of a project currently under construction at a theme park in Sichuan, China.
I understand that you might not be able to actually see it until your eyes learn to look past the day glo orange paint but once you do, you’ll notice that China is building its own giant robot that looks remarkably similar to a Gundam. Obviously it’s not because China would never do something devious/lazy like copy a creation from another country (NSFW). That’s just plain ludicrous.

UPDATE: According to ANN, a rep from the Chengdu Guosetianxiang park has stated that the design is not a copy, but acknowledged that “Since there are reports of similarities, we are currently working on modifications.”
I call BS. The shoulder marks function as a dead giveaway, as they attempt to mimic the marks on the Odaiba/Shizuoka 1:1 Gundam which you can see here. It’s the RX-78-2 down to a “T”. According to the ANN article the height of it has changed as well.
I’m reminded of the comedian Bill Hicks when he talked about Denis Leary stealing his jokes: “I have a scoop for you. I stole his [Leary’s] act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and, to really throw people off, I did it before he did.”
