AnimeFest was a good time, and we certainly enjoyed it. Aside from a certain few awkward moments (DEAR GOD MAN, IT’S THE END OF SUMMER IN TEXAS AND YOU’RE IN AN ELEVATOR... SHOWER!!!), our weekend was made o’ rage. A “stone groove”, as the guys in Trading Places would have called it.
Now here’s how we met Dai Satou!
While passing out stickers at the con, where I think we finally passed the 10000 mark(!), I looked over and noticed that my compatriot and good friend KuttSinister had struck up a conversation with what I presumed to be the guests of honor. This turned out to be the case, and not only was Mr. Satou a cool dude but he spoke pretty good English as well, and we exchanged pleasantries briefly before I asked him a quick question about Ergo Proxy and philosophy.
I crouched down slightly onto one knee and looked at Dai before asking “is Ergo Proxy a metaphor for structuralism vs post-structuralism, or something like modernity vs. post-modernity?”
At this point he paused for a split second, smiled briefly, and then got up and hugged me, saying “Thank you” aloud.
Everybody laughed, myself included. We then took a picture together that was even more hilarious, considering that my hair was lacking the trademark “anime journo style” that you’ve come to expect from the Ani.me staff, ie full of product and meticulously designed to make us look like we could stand up to any wind tunnel on the planet.
We’ll post it as soon as I can photoshop out the irregularities.
Anyway, the moral of this story is that you should always be familiar with the proper undergrad level reading list when meeting guests of honor who happen to know who Jacques Lacan is. It also helps if you can speak some baby Japanese, too.
Stay tuned for more interviews, pictures, videos, and reviews from AnimeFest 2010!
