Japanese Flag Gets the Claw in New Wolverine Poster

By animaven 1 year, 1 month ago

It was the snikt heard ‘round the world: someone leaked the new The Wolverine poster. Maybe. While Fox isn’t officially claiming the poster – yet – this looks like the real deal. And Japan is really pissed.

A nation with a great sense of pride (especially after the tsunami and earthquakes last year) fans of the Marvel bad boy are outraged Fox would dare desecrate the Japanese national flag. Wolverine, one of the flagship characters from Marvel (who, as a company as a whole right now, must feel like re-enacting Jack’s “King of the World” scene from Titanic every time they check out their box office stats) is notorious for his give-a-damn attitude, but this time it may have gone too far.

Japan is a big fan of Wolverine; he got his own anime, after all (bad as it was). And this movie, which takes place in Japan (Wolverine vs. ninjas? Wolverine vs. yakuza? Oh, the possibilities), is based off a well-loved comic run by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller that speaks highly of Japan. It won’t matter, though, if Japanese audiences can’t get past the desecration of the flag and that punny tag line (Rising son? Rising Soon? I see what you did there, Fox). I mean, can you imagine a film doing something like that to the American flag after 9/11? We’d have called the guys behind it terrorists and locked them up in Guantanamo Bay.

So what, exactly, are fans saying? From the extremely NSFW Sankaku Complex:

“How much do they hate Japan to go to all this trouble?”

“It’s pretty sad if it turns out to be true. To think America has to stoop to this to enhance its ruined national prestige.”

“Disrespecting another nation’s flag is just repugnant.”

“What does anyone expect of the yanks, they love war and provoking people.”

What do you guys think?

Sad thing is, I agree with all those comments. Even though I know it wasn't a intentional insult. It seems like one of those moments where someone fails at translating and says something horrible, while being blissfully unaware.

Ahahaha..... I guess those stereotypes of Americans trying to be better than everyone else is true. I'm more worried that they may do the same with Canada's and France's flag.

Out of all things to put on a movie poster. A flag being desicrated.

its all propaganda ya know, they say its "leaked" but i'm sure they just wanted to test the waters with reaction...either way even negative publicity is still publicity. Just keeps people talking. Fox can always just say they were mock ups not meant for public release and such.

Ne. =~=' I'm American and ashamed of this. >.> We'd throw a tantrum if another nation even looked at the U.S the wrong way. I swear, America is full of self-superior idiots.
