There are several authors that I love so much, I’ll devour anything they’ve written. So far, only three manga authors have made it to my rabidly-read-everything list, and Fumi Yoshinaga is definitely one of them. She has written several award-winning series, including Ooku: The Inner Chambers and Antique Bakery.
I was very late to the bakery party, and only read Antique Bakery several months ago, but I’d highly recommend it to anyone with a sweet tooth! Unfortunately, the series only spanned four volumes. But not to worry! If the ongoing Ooku series isn’t enough to whet your appetite for Fumi Yoshinaga, Yen Press will be releasing a new volume called Not Love but Delicious Foods in November.
One of Yoshinaga’s strengths as a story-teller is her ability to create complex characters with a variety of conflicting motives and emotions. In both Antique Bakery and All My Darling Daughters, published in the US by Viz Media, she weaves together seemingly disparate stories of everyday people in Japan. Her characters almost always surprise you, just when you think you know which direction she’ll be taking them.

Another of Yoshinaga’s strengths is probably what she’d call a weakness: her love of food. The yummy pastries she draws make your mouth water, and in this new volume she expands her focus to different types of foods, this time from actual restaurants in Tokyo.
I’ll be looking forward to Yoshinaga’s complicated characters and mouthwatering morsels when Not Love but Delicious Foods hits stores this November – just in time for turkey!
