Calling the main man of the show EMO isn’t fair. Hold on to that bit of information though it’s important. In Japanese culture it is almost impossible to find female management in the military, corporate world, and in the police forces. The places where we do find Female Dominance in Japan without going to the “Leather Bars” and Maid Cafes are family businesses and in the home. Some of the most powerful Men in Japan live in fear of the wives and mistresses. However what I want to address is definetly less ardous, Mothers who have broken the glass ceilings and run thier own restuarants, hotels, inns, spas, and small end manufacturing plants in Japan are slowly making progress to finally get recognition.
Now what kind of Japanese Man would be attracted to a Strong Japanese Female Cyborg with a sculpted body, a cruel standoff-ish disposition, and a hard demeanor? The one that likes Punishment. In the first movie you know they had a private relationship but it never was clear if it was more than friends. However at the end of the original movie when Motoko went Ape Bananas trying to kill the crab tank solo, Batou was a Knight in Shining Armor with an Anti-tank cannon and rip it open. In the second movie she rescued him from himself when he was hacked.
In the 1st Gig you get the hint he has moved emotionally away from her in the guise of pursuing her affections. If you are asking me how and when I saw it, go live in the pensive office environment of Japan in any capacity and you will see it. You will know what it looks like, but then you notice he has gone back to being the Major’s Right hand and dedicated supporter. Whether he likes where the plan is going or not he is always first making it happen. However you can’t help notice that Batou is built like a tank, mostly cyberized and equiped with a lot of nice features for combat. The funny thing about Combat for him is that when he gets beat, it is bad.
But for him to lose is rare. so skipping that he is harder on the rookies than anyone else. In the Episode where Motoko goes to re-learn who she is and how she became he is tailing her because he is worried about her, now that draws the question up is he in love or a concerned team mate? Because he looked panicked, lost, worried, paranoid, and frustrated in under 15 seconds. Go watch the episode and count it yourself. Later on that night he rejoins her in the coffee shop and for once she isn’t being cold or snappy and comforts him.
One aspect of Batou is his respect for the Tachycomas. He looks at the little guys as his own kids dare say or younger brothers. He has a bond with each and everyone of them, one issue being is how they can be differentiated (or like not at all) but you know. The natural mineral oil issue did raise some suspect effects on giving something artifical something natural and causing an individual lifelike response in the individual sense pissed the Major off. Tachy’s were talking back, even though she didn’t show it losing her cool we knew the Coma’s were on their way off screen for a minute. Batou tried defending them and it strained his relationship with the Major when she made the final call. However when Batou was under attack and the little guys came to his rescue, this was personally one of my favorite episodes. Without saying much Batou’s bacon was deep in the fryer and no one was coming to save him. There was no way the Major was coming fast enough to assist, so watching the underdogs get some glory was awesome!
Batou was a sad face when they were gone…However his character has been through every possible emotion betweens the movies and the shows. He has a deep rich history in which you get glimpses into specific conversations, scenes, and conversations. In 2nd Gig, the “Fight Club Paranoia” episode when the “John” character who is planning to go terrorist on his own boss and company tries to buy the Major at a secluded Club from Batou, this gives a dead drop hint that Batou has something more than a friendly crush going on. But to get to know the character is worth it when you watch the show, because you are always waiting for him to revert back to his edge.
