The Laughing man to me is the Smoking Gun of a conspiracy gone bad. Not in the sense that the plot tool and component of what it is and how it affects the Ghost in the Shell universe, but more on what it does to speed up the plot and make it dynamic. The Laughing Man Character is a ghost himself, he exists and only Humans with less than 10% modifications or unique modifications to their Cybernetic Brains and bodies can see him. He is gift or “Curse” is some strong that he can remove your vision, make you deaf, make you numb, or tap so deep into your physical being that he can make you commit suicide.
The Major deals with him on several occasions in Gig 1. As far as to impersonate him to bend some crafty politician over the table to get even with him. With Togusa who met him in the hospital and physically laid eyes on him while working a case was programmed to “forget what he saw” and sketch the “Laughing Man” logo on his sketch book. Everyone laughed at him and said he was lucky the kid didn’t sap his brain instantly.
Another dynamic I am impressed with is that the Laughing Man is not much older than a teenager but has the wisdom & Experience of a Special Ops team. Yes, he is that good. He camps out from time to time at a Children’s center and the kids who aren’t enhanced are his most loyal supporters. They run interference and set his schedule for him in the base, letting him slip in and out undetected. The other thing that amazes me is he is so obvious and easy to detect that he walks around in broad daylight causing the most terror and chaos without effort. In the Scene when he shoots someone and the logo pops up, he creates the most visually surreal and disturbing sequence of events forcing the world to take notice of his agenda however he disappears right in front of them.
Yes I want to take over the world sowing seeds of destruction and chaos to fix modern issues with the world and yet I find myself blinding the fools sent to pursue me and I walk away from them. The Laughing Man has been a key lynch pin in the series for me. His ability to play both ends of the moral spectrum impress me.
